About the President

The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) is pleased to announce the installation of Ir Dr CHAN Fuk Cheung as the 37th President for Session 2011/2012 at the HKIE’s 36th Annual General Meeting on 23 June 2011.

Ir Dr CHAN was elected Vice President in 2008. An HKIE Fellow, Ir Dr CHAN has served in the Council and a number of leading positions in various boards and committees, Division committee, Discipline Advisory Panel and Task Forces and has made significant contributions to the development of the Institution.

Ir Dr CHAN has a broad range of professional and management experience and is committed to lead the Institution to meet the challenges that lie ahead in the rapidly changing environment. After graduation with First Class Honours from the University of Hong Kong in Electrical Engineering, Ir Dr CHAN carried out research in power system protection and obtained his Doctor of Philosophy from Imperial College, University of London. He also holds an MBA from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, an MA in English for the Professions from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and a Master of Laws from University of London. Currently, Ir Dr CHAN is the Non-Executive Director of CLP Engineering Limited. He has extensive experience in power systems, specialising in power systems protection, distribution automation, lighting applications and energy services. Throughout his career, he has been involved in various management activities, including business process re-engineering, quality systems, contingency planning and procurement. Ir Dr CHAN has published over 50 papers and won the HKIE Transactions Prizes twice in 2003 and 2007.

Ir Dr CHAN is very active in the community and has served in a number of government bodies and professional organisations. He is the First Vice Chairperson of the newly established Engineering Forum Limited, a member of Hong Kong Council of Volunteering and hence Hong Kong, China Committee on United Nations Volunteers. He serves in Harbourfront Commission as alternate representative. In the World Federation of Engineering Organisations, he serves in the Standing Committee on Information and Communication. In the education areas, Ir Dr CHAN is a member of the Advisory Committee on Department of Electrical Engineering of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Advisory Board of the Engineering Discipline of the Vocational Training Council. He also serves in the Working Group on the Applied Learning – Engineering and Production for secondary schools.

With his outstanding credentials, extensive experience and strong commitment in serving the profession, Ir Dr CHAN is well positioned in representing and leading the HKIE to new levels of achievement in his term of presidency.
